There is no official Georgian dub of Kickboxer. The version that exists was recorded in the mid-1990s onto a single VHS tape, copied endlessly at flea markets in Tbilisi. The audio is tinny, the video flickers with tracking lines, and Kavtaradze’s voice sometimes overlaps with the original English. Yet, that imperfection is part of its charm.
What elevates Kickboxer above standard B-movie fare is its dedication to the "training montage" trope. After realizing he cannot defeat Tong Po with his current skill set, Kurt seeks out the reclusive master Xian Chow. The middle act of the film is a cinematic study in discipline. Unlike the slick, high-tech training of Hollywood blockbusters, the training here is organic and primal. Kurt learns to move like a dancer, to use the environment to his advantage, and to harness the "spirit of the warrior."
