Abstract: This paper examines the position of the transgender community within the broader Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) culture. While often unified under a single acronym for political advocacy, the relationship between transgender individuals and the cisgender-dominant LGBTQ culture has been historically complex. This paper explores the shared historical oppression that forged a coalition, the moments of intra-community tension (such as the LGB exclusionist movements), the unique medical and social challenges facing transgender people, and the emerging cultural renaissance led by transgender artists and activists.
