The proliferation of Korean dramas and films in Southeast Asia during the early 2010s marked a significant phase of the Hallyu (Korean Wave). In Indonesia, a unique consumption practice emerged in 2012: “hot” or explicit Korean romantic role-play films paired with Indonesian subtitles. This paper analyzes the phenomenon, focusing on the socio-technical dynamics of fan-produced subtitles, the appeal of adult-oriented Korean indie/ erotic cinema (e.g., The Taste of Money, Eungyo), and the role of online forums (Kaskus, Indowebster) in distributing these “film role play” subtitles. It argues that Indonesian fan-subbers reframed Korean erotic narratives to suit local moral ambiguities, creating a niche digital subculture distinct from mainstream K-drama fandom.
