The black-and-white cinematography was raw, almost documentary-like. And there he was: Winnetou, the Apache chief, but not played by Lex Barker or Pierre Brice. This Winnetou was a Romanian actor, his face gaunt, his braids dark as coal. He spoke in a dubbing that had never been finished—German lip movements, but a Romanian voiceover, flat and haunted.
