Yawcam as a Standalone IP Camera Hotspot: A Technical Evaluation

Abstract

Yawcam (Yet Another WebCAM software) is a free, Java-based application traditionally used to stream video from a webcam to a local network or the internet. This paper examines Yawcam’s capability to function as a self-contained IP camera hotspot—i.e., converting a laptop’s built-in or USB webcam into a wireless IP camera without requiring a separate router. By combining Yawcam’s HTTP server with Windows’ native mobile hotspot feature, users can create an ad-hoc surveillance network. This paper covers setup procedures, performance benchmarks, security considerations, and limitations compared to dedicated IP cameras.
